- Characters are counted as user-perceived characters, so an emoji counts as 1; some platforms count differently.
Questions
How are characters counted?
As user-perceived characters (graphemes), so an emoji or an accented letter counts as 1. The count without spaces leaves out spaces, tabs and line breaks.
Which limits can I check against?
Presets for an X post (280 characters), SMS and meta descriptions (160), page titles (60), Instagram captions (2,200), LinkedIn posts (3,000) and essays of 250, 500 or 1,000 words. The meter shows what is left or how far over you are.
Can I count words in a document?
Yes. Open a TXT, Markdown, HTML, CSV or DOCX file and its text is counted in your browser.
