How to use
- Choose Equation or System.
- Type the equation(s) using x, y, z…
- Read solutions and the method used.
Worked example
2x + y = 7 and x − y = 2 give x = 3, y = 1.
Supported formats and limits
| Input | Equations |
|---|---|
| Output | Solutions with steps |
| Engine | Closed forms for degree ≤ 2; Durand–Kerner for higher degrees; Gaussian elimination with exact rationals |
Limitations
- Non-polynomial equations (such as sin(x) = x/2) are solved numerically in the grapher instead.
Questions
Are the answers exact?
Linear and quadratic equations give exact values, including radicals and complex roots. For degree 3 and above, rational roots are found exactly and the rest are approximated numerically (Durand-Kerner with Newton polishing) to about 1e-10. Linear systems are solved with exact fractions.
What if a system has no solution or infinitely many?
The solver says so. It also reports identities such as x = x and contradictions such as 0 = 1 instead of returning a number.
Can it solve sin(x) = x/2?
No. Only polynomial equations and linear systems are supported. Plot both sides in the function grapher to find intersections numerically.
