How to use
- Paste numbers separated by commas, spaces or lines.
- Choose sample or population formulas.
- Switch to Distributions for probabilities.
Worked example
2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9: mean 5, population SD 2, sample SD 2.138.
Supported formats and limits
| Input | Numbers (pasted or CSV column), Distribution parameters |
|---|---|
| Output | Statistics, histogram, box plot |
| Engine | Two-pass numerically stable variance; inclusive/exclusive quartile methods; standard numerical CDFs |
Limitations
- Quartile conventions differ between software; the method used is shown.
Questions
Should I use sample or population standard deviation?
Use population when your numbers are the whole group, and sample when they are a sample drawn from a larger group. For 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9 the population SD is 2 and the sample SD is 2.138.
Why do my quartiles differ from another program?
There are several quartile conventions. The calculator lets you choose the method and shows which one was used, so you can match your course or software.
What happens to text in my data?
Items that are not numbers are ignored. The page shows how many were skipped and the first few of them, so you can see what was left out.
