How to use
- Choose (or drop) your site's output folder, for example dist/, build/ or public/.
- Enter the site URL if pages use absolute links to your own domain, or a base path such as /docs/ if the site is served from a sub-folder.
- Review broken references grouped by page, optionally check external links, and export the CSV.
Worked example
In the sample site, blog/index.html links to /posts/old-title/ on line 12; the report shows “Missing: posts/old-title/index.html.” together with the element, attribute and column.
Supported formats and limits
| Input | A folder of HTML files (static site build), Single HTML files |
|---|---|
| Output | Broken references with file, line and column, Link report (CSV) |
| Limits | Up to 20,000 files (HTML and CSS are read; other files are only checked for existence). External links are listed; the optional reachability check can only tell whether a server responded, because browsers hide other sites' status codes. |
| Engine | Position-tracking HTML/CSS scanner (href, src, srcset, link, poster, meta refresh, CSS url() and @import) resolved against the folder: root-relative paths with a base path, index.html directories, clean URLs, query/hash stripping, percent-decoding and #fragment ids |
Limitations
- External links can only be reported as responded or unreachable; a 404 page still counts as a response, and http:// links cannot be requested from an https page.
- Links created by JavaScript at run time are not found, and server rewrites other than clean URLs and directory indexes are not known.
Questions
Does it crawl my live website?
No. It reads the files in the folder you choose, so it finds internal broken links before you publish. Files are not uploaded.
Can it check external links?
External links are listed. The optional reachability check sends one request per URL from your browser, but browsers hide other sites' status codes, so it can only report responded or network error. A 404 page still counts as a response.
Privacy
Runs on your device. Files and text are processed in this browser tab and are not uploaded.
- External sites your pages link to (only if you click “Check reachability”): One no-cors request per external URL, sent from your browser directly to that site. No file contents are sent; the browser hides the response, so only “responded” or “network error” can be reported.
