How to use

  1. Add a PDF.
  2. Choose a level: Light (150 DPI), Balanced (110 DPI) or Strong (72 DPI); or Rasterize for scanned documents.
  3. Compare the before and after sizes, then download.

Worked example

A 2.9 MB three-page brochure with three 1800 × 1200 photos, each shown 6.9 inches wide, became 52 KB at Balanced: every photo was resampled to 756 × 504 pixels (110 DPI) and the text stayed selectable. The 207 KB sample brochure becomes 57 KB at Light and 16 KB at Strong.

Supported formats and limits

InputPDF
OutputPDF
LimitsUp to 200 MB.
Enginepdf-lib object rewriting with canvas JPEG re-encoding in a Web Worker; optional page rasterization with pdf.js

Limitations

  • PDFs that are mostly text and vectors are often already small and may shrink little.
  • Rasterize turns pages into images, so text is no longer selectable unless you run OCR afterwards.
  • Images with transparency, CMYK, indexed or other unusual colour spaces are left as they are; when nothing can be made smaller the original is kept and reported as already optimized.

Questions

Will my text still be selectable?

Yes at Light, Balanced and Strong: only embedded images are resampled and recompressed, and text and vector graphics are kept. Rasterize turns each page into an image, so text is no longer selectable unless you run OCR afterwards.

Why did my PDF barely shrink?

PDFs that are mostly text and vectors are often already small. Images with transparency, CMYK or other unusual colour spaces are left as they are, and when nothing can be made smaller the original is kept and reported as already optimized.
