Questions
Does making an EAN or UPC barcode give me a product number?
No. The tool only draws the symbol for the number you enter. For retail products, EAN and UPC numbers must be assigned to your company by GS1 (or a licensed reseller) to be valid in stores.
Do I need to type the check digit?
No. For EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E and ITF-14 you can leave it off and it is calculated, or type it and it is verified. EAN-13 400638133393 gets the check digit 1, giving 4006381333931.
Will it scan?
The symbol is encoded correctly, but scanning also depends on print size, quiet zones, contrast and the scanner. Print a sample at the final size and test it with the scanner you will use.
